Jeniferever / The Next Autumn Soundtrack - split CD/12"
Jeniferever are Swedish, but thankfully sound nothing like abba, I don’t know if they drive Volvos or shop at ikea but they do make nice calming music, so it’s ok. Not really a punk band to be honest but hey. They have two tracks on this EP (one about the 8 minute mark and the other about 5) and flow really nicely inbetween simple riffs on clean guitar and more powerful distorted guitars. There aren’t really many vocals going on, the odd really quiet, almost spoken-word bits that fit nicely. To be honest these guys really make me think of Mogwai, only less scary. That’s a good thing for me though as I’m all too often lured into an evil Mogwai trap, where I’m just thinking how nice a track is and then they stamp on my head with evil noises that would scare even the scariest of lions. So yeh, nice calming rock-ish music that wont terrify you unexpectedly, I look forward to an album form these guys. If you haven’t heard any Mogwai, you should get some of that too, the have the ‘calm before the storm’ thing down to an art.
The Next Autumn Soundtrack aren’t Swedish, they’re from Grimsby and also make quite chilled music but in a very different way to Jeniferever. TNAS have 3 tracks on this but one of them is dead short so I don’t reckon it counts. The two that I do count are good tho, chilled out melodies on guitar backed by simple drumming and bass, interspersed with brief moments of aggression but not real drastic changes that would fuck up the balance. Well thought out tunes, vocals that I thought were gonna piss me off cos their verging on whiney but I’m actually starting to really like and they really fit the music well. What more can I say, a good late night listen or for when you’re feeling a bit fragile it’s a real good CD and you should spend all your money on it. I’m not sure how much it costs actually, but it’s released through BSM recs and Toddler recs and you can find out from them.
