Jeniferever - Iris (ep)
(Big Scary Monsters)
if the previous split with the next autumn soundtrack showed off swedish band jeniferever's considerable potential, then this release sees that potential fully seized and thrust into the heavens. this is lush melodic indie rock along the lines of appleseed cast or the like on the deep elm roster, the perfectly measured minimilism creating songs of supreme calming elegance.
with the 4 tracks of the ep clocking in at a total of 37 minutes, these guys don't disappoint on the quantity either, and don't place any restrictions on their roaming sound - no semblance of normal song stucture is allowed to dampen their expansive nature. the presence of some ultra-delicate vocals is a pleasant bonus to what is an often instrumental track, and the band also make use of soothing horns to add another bit of niceness to their progressive sound.
for me, the highlight on here is 2nd track 'for the world is hollow...'; perhaps the most ambitious and epic song on here, the song takes a typically tender approach initially, but eventually builds to a haunting melody that takes its sweet time to expand and dominate the ending in a powerful fashion. the track finally calls it a day after 13 minutes, when all of your senses have been well and truly run dry. this kind of approach is in keeping with the remaining songs on here; an often mellow and melancholic, but ultimately uplifting and powerful collection. it's sparse yet at the same time grand as hell. just...lovely.
